Exam Mode & Format

The Departmental Examinations 2025 for ITOs and ITIs shall be held in Online Mode (except Paper-IV for ITO Examination), in accordance with the Amended Departmental Examination Rules, 2009 (Effective from 2023 Examination onwards).

Online Papers: Question papers are displayed on screen; answers are captured via button click (objective/MCQ format).
ITO Paper-IV Exception: Subjective paper conducted in offline mode. Physical question papers and answer booklets provided.

The syllabus remains the same as was applicable for Departmental Examination-2024. All In-charge of Examinations must arrange answer sheets for ITI subjective papers (Paper-V — Hindi, Paper-VI — Examination of Accounts for Old Pattern candidates) and ITO Paper-V (Office Procedure) and Paper-VI for Old Pattern candidates.

  • Steno Grade I, II, III
  • LDC including Hindi Typist
  • Senior T.A.
ITI Exam (IT Inspector)
  • All ITIs (for confirmation)
  • Office Superintendents
  • T.As (already passed MS Exam)
  • Sr. T.As (already passed MS Exam)
  • Steno Gr. III, II, I (already passed MS Exam)
ITO Exam (IT Officer)
  • ITI (passed ITI Exam)
  • Office Superintendent (passed ITI)
  • Sr. T.A (passed ITI)
  • T.A. (passed ITI)
  • Steno Gr. II & I (passed ITI + 5 yrs service)
Stenographers Grade-II for ITO: Only those who have completed 5 years of regular service after induction AND have passed the ITI Exam are eligible. (As per F.No.DE2012/Notification/DIT(Exam)/2251 dated 11.07.2012)
No Age Bar: The Amended Department Examination Rules 2009 do not place any age bar for taking ITO and ITI Examination for new pattern candidates. The number of chances for all categories (including SC/ST availing betterment chance) is limited to ten.

Application Process

Candidates shall fill the application form online at www.incometaxindia.gov.in. The online application window opens from 23.05.2025 (10:00 AM).

Last Date: 23.06.2025 (8:00 PM). No application form will be accepted after this date. Physical printout must also be submitted to Pr. CCsIT/CsIT (In-charge of Examination).
  • Read all instructions carefully before filling the form. Only one application form per candidate.
  • Upload a scanned passport-size photograph and scanned signature in .jpg format.
  • Previous records will be reflected against your roll number. Raise a query if any data is incorrect.
  • First-time candidates will be allotted new roll numbers after verification.
  • Candidates changing category (PQ→Normal or Normal→Betterment) need prior Directorate approval.
  • Retain a copy of the application printout as acknowledgement. Do NOT fold, punch or crush the printout.
  • Candidates who do not submit a physical printout to the In-charge of Examination will not be permitted to appear, even if they submitted online.

Important Rules & Clauses

  • Candidates who have already qualified a paper/examination are not eligible for re-appearing in that paper, except betterment candidates (reserved category who have qualified the entire exam).
  • The effective date of passing the Examination is governed by Directorate Instruction F. No. DE/Delhi/Effective Date/DIT/2011/3886 dated 22.12.2011.
  • The effective date of passing shall be the date of declaration of result by the Directorate (ITO/ITI) or by the CCIT/CIT In-charge (MS Examination).
  • Adhoc employees are not eligible even if they belong to eligible cadres.
  • Number of chances is limited to ten for all categories. Verification of chances availed must be done with due care by the In-charge of Examination.
